Recyle your clothes

Recycle your clothes

Summer’s here, and you’ll be wanting new clothes, right? You probably throw or give away all your winter clothes and buy new ones. Save money, and get “new” clothes by doing some of these projects.

If you have some long jeans/pants that fit around your waist, but are too short (or will be next time it’s cold enough to wear them), why not make them into cute, fashionable bermudas?

1. With pants on, mark with a pen approx. 2 inches below the knee.
2. With them off, cut across at the marked spot.
3. With pants on, fold them up to make a cuff. Tada! Brand new, modest, fashionable shorts!
Other Options:
Sew cuff so that you won’t have to re-fold them after every wash.
Cut them very evenly just at the knee and let them go raggedy.
Cut them directly above the knee, and fold up to make mid-length shorts.

Need a new Sunday skirt? Make sure you’ve looked at this month’s “Crafts and Cookery” article!

Have some jeans you’ve grown out of? Make them into a cute bag!

1) Cut the legs off so you have on hole at the bottom.
2) Turn inside out.
3) Sew bottom.
4) Turn right-side out.
5) Cut a strip for the strap that is 3 inches wide, and your choice of length.
6) Fold it narrow-ways inside out, and sew up the long side.
7)Turn right-side out, and attach to bag.

Tie Skirt

Crafts and Cookery

Add some color to your summer:
Wanting a fun new clothing item that’s unique, creative and sure to get a gazillion compliments?
Look no further!
Although you have to make this skirt, it’s easy and fun!

Skill Level: beginner – knowing how to use a sewing machine is really the only requirement, although this can be done by hand

Supplies:

Ties – you probably want 15 depending on how big you want it to be and if you mess up.
Scissors – snip snip!
Thread – a dark brown would probably be the best but it may vary depending on what color your ties are.
Elastic – for an elastic waistband
Seam ripper – to rip the ties a bit
tape measurer – to measure your waist
pins – to hold the ties together

Instructions:
1)Find ties that you like! (Better ask your dad before you take all his!) You may want to choose your ties to fit your personality or to be compatible colors with each other.

2)Take the ties and rip (using the seam ripper) all the seams out of the ties.
optional step
3) Once you have your ties ripped you may want to pin them together to see which ones you want to go with each other and how long you want it.
How to do this?:
a) Take a tie and hold it at the short end
b) Take another tie (the one you want next to it) and match up the bottoms (not the tops) then stick two or three pins along the side of the two ties to hold them together, repeat this until you have it the way you want it
4) Make sure you know how big your waist is so you know how many ties you’ll need. Better safe than sorry!
5) Once your ties are ripped, pinned and ready for assembly. It’s time for sewing!
Take out your sewing machine, overlap the edges of two of the ties and sew! Don’t do the bottoms or the tops yet just the sides. Make sure you don’t go completely around. Leave two of the ties disconnected. (Making one flat line of ties instead of a complete circle.)
6) Once that’s done, you can do the bottom. This part is simple if you’ve already done the sides, just a little more edging . . .
7) Now it’s time for the top! You need to do more pinning make sure it’s perfect. For this part if you want an elastic waistband (recommended) you need to make a tube out of the top, just pull it down, however, before sewing make sure you run the elastic through the tube. Make sure it’s just a tad shorter than the tube (keep it from disappearing into the tube by safety pinning it to the side.)
8) Now sew up the edge of the tube! (Make sure you don’t close up the ends . . . the elastic still isn’t connected yet!) You may want to try the skirt on (just pin up the side) and see if it works . . . make any adjustments that need to happen and then . . .
9) Sew up the last two ties and close the tube (connect the elastic too!) The elastic should be tight on you and the skirt finished!
10) Final Step – Wear it somewhere and keep track of all the comments you get!
